My Afflation

It's another one of those days when I swear I just gave birth , but here she is, 11 years later and entering 6th grade. Wasn't she just in kindergarten ? And why is 6th the beginning of middle school now? It should be the last year of elementary. Mom, you got me to school on time. I got this. You can go to work now. End of day results :  She claims she has three of the best teachers in the school (she likes her teachers and classmates, this is a bonus).  She got violin instead of Cadet Corps (thank goodness!) Math is soooooo basic , but I still had to double-check that she didn't miss any prime numbers and tomorrow's homework is composite numbers.  She made friends (she's an introvert at first, so this is important). I am grateful that there wasn't any sort of meltdown over not being able to go to school with her BFF's from elementary. And now that we have the rest of the school supply/clothing shopping out of the way I am going to pass ...

You know the old slogan, " Milk, it does a body good" . Now it will do our schools and kids good too. We already collect box tops, soup can labels, grocery receipts, and who knows what else to support our schools and give them the extra cash that the state of California can't seem to come up with. (Yes, I support public education and I'm appalled at how far California has fallen since I graduated from high school. Do NOT get me started on Prop 13). So in addition to reading labels for trans-fat and partially hydrogenated oils I'll be looking out for the Real California Milk seal. Even better, it's a local organization working to give back to the community. Those savvy cows, along with Scholastic, are supporting California schools by launching the Real Seal Appeal program and awarding California schools with up to $2 million in cash , books and prizes. Well, it had to end sometime. The  Autumn Equinox is this week.  Even here in SoCal we observe the end of summer. Boots come out to replace sandals. Jeans and sweaters come out at night. Non-natives start complaining about the lack of "weather" (which, after living 9+ years in Oregon, I maintain is overrated). Ski passes are bought. Some of us mourn the end of summer. Especially when it was so short and went by so quickly that we could barely enjoy it . You may not like Katy Perry (I do, she’s a hoot!!), but I think her song was this year’s summer anthem. Joy's teacher said that she did very well her first day, fit right in with the kids, got exhausted during recess, and she has no doubt that Joy will do well this first year. Neither do I. Joy can already do a lot of the things that they are asking her to do academically, like count from 1-10 forwards and backwards and recognize and spell her first and last name, and write it. And so it begins. Now to get her to do her homework.

She's in a better mood than before and ready for school. Joy woke up before 7 AM in a good mood and ready to start school. She was half-way dressed when she came in to wake me up, saying "Wake up Mommy, it's time to go to school". She was quite upset that she didn't get to start as early as Josh, but I think she'll do fine. She's been waiting for this day for two years.
