Just under the Wire

I made it! Had to add in a few audiobooks that I had forgotten to, but it all counts, right? My 2017 in books. You can see my whole list here . What was your favorite book of 2017? What are you looking forward to reading in 2018?

New Year Goal: Completist

This was the worst year for me yet since I started keeping track on Goodreads . I pretty much stopped reading, including audiobooks, once I moved to Houston. It's time to change that fact. This year, I might try one of these lists to broaden my horizons: I've already been given a few suggestions and yes, my To Read Shelf has increased what feels like exponentially. Add your suggestions in the comments or on the G+ post.

Angels and Automatons: a shared-world steampunk anthology by Stephen Minchin — Kickstarter

New Zealand is at it again ... new steampunk anthology with Philippa Ballantine as a contributor. I'm excited and might be reading works from the other authors as I wait for this one to come out. Angels and Automatons is a shared-world steampunk anthology set in the town of Angelston on New Zealand’s rugged and remote West Coast. The team of authors contributing to the project includes established names as well as those at the early stages of their careers, with folks from New Zealand and around the world. They will all be collaborating on the creation of a shared world in which their interconnected stories will be set – all of the authors will play an equal role, and the world will be unique to this anthology. The resulting book will be approximately 300 pages (longer, if our stretch goals are met) and together, the stories will tell a thrilling and distinctly New Zealand tale of exploration, invention, and destruction. Be aware that the NZD has a higher value than USD. ...

Read "Princess of Mars" Before the Martians Attack

With John Carter (by Edgar Rice Burroughs , you know, the Tarzan guy) coming out soon, I got on Project Gutenburg and found the first 5 books for free (which can also be bought online for your Kindle - The John Carter of Mars Collection  (3 books) - but my Nook reads epubs, so I opted to go the free route rather than pay, because, you know B&N offers a similar collection too). By the way, please keep in mind that this series was written at the turn of the 20th century and is set just after the Civil War. Free Downloads : Princess of Mars also as an audiobook   The Gods of Mars   Warlord of Mars   Thuvia, Maid of Mars   Chessmen of Mars I haven't been able to find books 6-11 for free, but I will keep looking. In the meantime, you can read it online , with illustrations at read.gov UPDATE  A little digging around the interwebz helped me find the rest of the series. They are zip, text, and HTML versions at Project Gutenberg Australi...

Baen Free Library

I wish I had known about this a while ago!! My library fines might be A LOT less Introducing the Baen Free Library by Eric Flint Baen Books is now making available — for free — a number of its titles in electronic format. We're calling it the Baen Free Library. Anyone who wishes can read these titles online — no conditions, no strings attached. (Later we may ask for an extremely simple, name & email only, registration. ) Or, if you prefer, you can download the books in one of several formats. Again, with no conditions or strings attached. (URLs to sites which offer the readers for these format are also listed. ) Why are we doing this? Well, for two reasons. The first is what you might call a "matter of principle." This all started as a byproduct of an online "virtual brawl" I got into with a number of people, some of them professional SF authors, over the issue of online piracy of copyrighted works and what to do about it. There was a school of thought, whi...
